To say Danny likes to talk is a gross understatement. He loves to talk and he loves to talk about others the most. He's a bit nosy sometimes, curiosity gets the better of him and he's sometimes off-puttingly forward with his questions. He can't help it. (well, he could but that's no fun) People and their stories fascinate him and this intrigue with strangers is more or less why he got into journalism: so they'd pay him to bug people about their personal lives. Danny's not afraid of much and is considered a little reckless by some. He's cocky and a instinctively self-serving at times but charming as hell and makes friends fast. He craves attention and intimacy, maybe a little too much. He's good under stress, rarely loses his head.

Important Note: When Danny was young, his personality used to invert when he was threatened or afraid. He'd become another person: more aggressive and manipulative, sociopathic and highly protective of himself. He hasn't done this for years, but he dreams that he's talking to that part of himself sometimes. He tends to call himself by his proper name, 'Daniel', when in this mindset. This side of his personality only manifests in times of terror or confusion.

LOOKS LIKE

Standing 5'11, 172 pounds Danny is tall energetically lithe young man. He spends a lot of his time sprinting around trying to get his shots and because of this has a runner's wiry, long-legged build. Danny inherited dark hair, a pair of pale blue eyes, and a strong, elegant bone structure from his Russian mother. Unfortunately, try as she did to give him good genetics, Danny inherited his father's tendency to make goofy facial expressions while speaking. He's extremely expressive in both gesture and look. He can and does illustrate his stories with his hands. His grin tends to be crooked and he's a fan of Levis and one lucky leather jacket he got in Ireland.

He has two tattoos; one is a Tibetan script from the nape of his neck to the base if his spine. It says, "It is better to have seen once, than heard a thousands times." The second one he doesn't remember getting, he doesn't know what language its in and he has no idea what it says. It runs the length of his right forearm, inner elbow to wrist. There are also a few very light scars scratched along his left temple, starting at the corner of his eye. (From the blast that blinded it.)

He has two distinctive voices as Danny versus Daniel. They sounds like this.

HISTORY

Veronica and Benjamin Vies died when Danny was 4. He raised by his father's insane older sister: a Puritanical fanatic of no particular faith (she took the best bits from all the major, fire and brimstone religions). She expected unattainable perfection and punished failure in terribly creative ways. Really, little else need to be said about his childhood beyond that but the things that happened to him between the ages 4-7 were so incredibly traumatic that by the time Social Services extracted him from his aunt and shipped her to the bug-house, he'd developed an entire imaginary friend to protect him. He called this friend 'Daniel' and said it was 'Daniel' who called the social workers.

Danny grew out of this friend or so it was assumed. He moved in with a loving aunt and uncle and his twin Deaf cousins Molly and Kady who taught him ASL from a young age. He was given his first Polaroid camera at age eight. From there, he basically never was without one. In school he was a smart student, a quick learner, but ultimately too distracted by the social aspect of school to be bothered with much else. It was also noticed in Jr. High - adolescent angst setting in for the tween/teen years - that stress induced a peculiar personality reversal in him that was so alarmingly total that it frightened people.

More worrisome: Danny sometimes didn't remember behaving this way. He was ultimately diagnosed as a borderline Dissociative Identity Disorder mostly because he had a habit of thinking of himself as 'Daniel', not Danny, when he acted out of the ordinary. By high school he was taking a daily dosage of psychotropics and serotonin that dismissed Daniel forever. (For the most part. Danny still has dreams about talking to himself and occasionally feels that he lost track of time, but never anything to worry about.)

He only ever had one serious romantic connection. This was during his time at Columbia University with a woman named Delia Cole, the daughter of a dirty ambassador with whom he eventually fell out with after his first big break. She went on to become a Congresswoman.

Danny's been all over the world working for such big magazines as National Geographic and Newsweek and is quite successful. His penname - Danny Boyd - has received a Pulitzer for his work in Tibet and Nepal. He's been in lots of dangerous places, done some war journalism and was half blinded in his left eye on assignment in Iraq. Danny never lets anything stand in the way of him and his goals. He's never let a few bad formative years bring him down and, no, he's not gonna talk about it. Basically none of his friends know anything about his childhood.

He's on the ship in the visual tech department (movies, laptops, PA systems, etc) purely to get an interview with some it's more...interesting politically involved passengers. AKA: Delia Cole. He's pretty much bullshitting his innocuous cover job. His real goal is getting his ex to turn some serious coat on her scumbag father.

SPECIAL ABILITIES/RANDOM FACTS

Danny is a writer and photographer. He's fluent in ASL. He speaks bastardized versions of lots of languages. Spanglish, bad Arabic and passable Mandarin Chinese being his main staple. He loves Nepal and goes there as often as he can to mountain climb. He's partially blind in his left eye. Can't whistle. Is stupidly ticklish. Is an effective dirty fighter.

STRENGTHS

Quick Learner: Danny is fast on his feet and a good thinker. He's always been fast to fend for himself and needs to rely on people for very short amounts of time. He's clever.

Observant: His a journalist. His eyes and ears are photographic recording devices. Don't blurt your secrets around him because he'll find a way to spin it into a story. Because of this, he's a good judge of character and relies on his gut to tell him who's on the level.

Good Friend: Yeah, he's a bit loud, nosy, and over confident, but he'd go to very great lengths for his friends and since he makes friends so fast, he goes to lots of lengths. He's the sort of pal who will help you bury the body.

WEAKNESSES

Meds: Danny is on medication to keep his secondary personality at bay. Without a prescription refill he will run out and all manner of creepiness could occur: black outs, sleep walking, personality changes, amnesia. He is reliant on his medicine.

Partially Blind: Due to an accident with a bullet or twenty in a fire fight, Danny's left eye sees nothing but vague shapes and grays. His depth perception tends to fail sometimes at well.

Paranoid: It's not exactly surprising that Danny, when frightened, gets paranoid and over excited. He can blow small things out of proportion, work himself into a panic. It takes a lot to do it, but when he's freak out he's crazy with it. He's very good at getting caught up in his own head and convincing himself of things he's only imagined.

Little OCD: He's got a lot of funny tics and habits that he needs to fulfill. He eats certain things in even numbers for example. Has to take pictures of certain people. Must wear a certain shirt. Or can't help but drum his hands on the table. If he ignores these compulsions it's very uncomfortable and - sometimes - he'll black out and wake up having done whatever it was he was trying not to do.
